Le docteur Sam Hawthorne est un médecin de campagne détective amateur vivant dans le village de Northmont en Nouvelle-Angleterre.

Le Dr Sam Hawthorne (aux prestigieuses initiales SH...) est arrivé à Northmont au volant de sa Pierce-Arrow jaune, modèle 1921, le 22 janvier 1922, y ouvrant un cabinet et embauchant à ses côtés une infirmière (April).

Et depuis le bon docteur s'est occupé autant de ses patients que des nombreuses énigmes policières qui sont venues troubler la quiétude de son petit village. Il est un spécialiste des problèmes policiers que l'on dit de "Chambre Close" et a été amené à enquêter sur des meurtres insolites et des phénomènes miraculeux jusqu'à sa dernière enquête connue, en 1939, alors qu'il était âgé de 43 ans.

C'est à la retraite durant les années 1970 que le "Dr Sam" (comme l'appellent familièrement ses concitoyens) évoque ses souvenirs vieux de plus d'un demi-siècle à un visiteur anonyme, après lui avoir proposé un verre de vin.
